7 Q&A's for Starting you Own Web Business

Hello Rogue Investors,

Welcome to Day 4 of 7 Days of Thanks

7 Questions and 7 Answers for Creating an Internet Business

1. How do I choose a domain name? Based upon your business idea, you will first need to search for an available domain name or universal record locator (URL). In fact, you should first check to make sure the URL is available even before you name your business. I have setup many businesses and even changed the name based upon an available domain name. It can be frustrating, but it is extremely important. You certainly don’t want to name your business Apex Properties, LLC and then find out that www.apexproperties.com is taken. To search for an available domain, visit www.123domains.com. When you are ready to purchase, visit www.godaddy.com for the most affordable prices. If your business is located in a country outside of the United States, like the U.K., you will want a “.co.uk” domain or in Canada you will want a “.ca” domain; however, worldwide the most well known domain extension for business is the “.com.” You should expect to pay about $8 to $12 per year per domain.

2. Where do I host my website? Early on you will not need your own server, but you will need a hosted location. Please know that all hosting companies are not the same. Do not feel like you have to host with the same company where you purchased your domain name. In my opinion, there are better options. You will want a business account with plenty of space and data transfers. You will also need professional email options so you can start going from MichaelW_0123@yahoo.com to Michael@rogueinvestor.com. Also, be sure that your hosting company provides web statistics, support for SSL, PHP, and MySql. Don’t bother asking what these silly things are, but just be aware that you may need them. You should expect to pay between $10 and $20 per month depending upon your needs.

3. How do I build my website? You can do it yourself with site builder templates, but oftentimes these sites look like templates. Be careful. You want to look professional and you want to make sure that your template is not being used by other web businesses. My recommendation is to pay a graphic artist to build a template. You can expect to pay from $500 to $2000 depending upon your needs. If you need custom forms or a database driven site, your cost will be on the higher side.

4. How do I update my website? Websites are dynamic. They are never finished. You must update, update, update. Realize from the beginning that you do not build a website and then just let all the money pour in. Plan on getting some training or putting in your budget room for web updates. If you plan on doing the updates, the best HTML editing software in my opinion is Dreamweaver. Unfortunately, Dreamweaver costs about $400. However, there is a free option that not many people know about and it is call Kompozer (www.kompozer.net).

5. How do I accept payments on my website? You have a website, but now you need to accept payments online. First, I will tell you the easy way to get started. Go to PayPal and setup an account. Once your account is setup, you can place a PayPal link on your website and change the price of your products easily. PayPal accepts major credit cards like Mastercard and  Visa; or, you can even accept checking account debits using PayPal. PayPal is the standard that has been used by Ebay merchants for years and it’s why Ebay bought the company. Next, setup a Merchant account with your credit card company or bank. This gets a little more complicated because you have to use a payment processor and you will be responsible for monthly gateway fees. You will also need to get a security certificate for your website. That will allow you to use “https” when someone orders from your site. You will now need to purchase a merchant shopping cart and connect everything together.

6. I have a website, but no traffic. What now? You need optimized web pages that search engine robots recognize. On the Web there are two main visitors to consider: humans and search engine programs. I’m sorry if this sounds a little like the Matrix, but there is a difference. Humans like pretty colors, pictures, music, and video. Search engines like content rich text that is on topic. Search engines like a website that says it is about a particular topic and then all the content backs that up. For example, if you have a site about credit repair, then you should have plenty of pages of content on related topics, such as the three credit bureaus. Finally, you will need to have other websites recognize you and send traffic your way. This is a little more difficult and it is not as easy as trading links. Google started this trend when they created a search algorithm that is strongly based upon inbound links to your site.

7.  I have traffic, but I’m not making any sales. What gives? You now have to convert the traffic to sales. This is the human part. What makes a web visitor react? What makes a visitor signup for a newsletter or purchase your product. The answer is complex, but it really revolves around trust. You have to answer all the questions, look professional, and provide all of the same benefits that a physical store has, such as a phone number. You will have to first capture their attention, tell your story, ask for the sale, provide a compelling reason why they can’t wait such as bonuses and back it up with guarantees. And on the Web one of the big hesitations is, in addition to not being able to call and speak to someone, is shipping. If you have a product and you can offer free shipping, you are already half of the way there. Now throw in some testimonials or satisfied clients and you are in business.
